Telefonica said on Tuesday that its M2M partnership programme has reached its target of more than 250 members six months ahead of schedule.

170 partners have joined since February, including device manufacturers, solution providers and distributors Europe and the U.S. A further 100 companies are on the verge of joining up, the telco said.

"Our programme has been positively embrace by the M2M market, exceeding our initial expectations and proving that this framework can establish new commercial opportunities," said Rafael García Meiro, director of B2B global partner sales, indirect sales channels, at Telefonica, in a statement.

Industry body the GSMA puts the number of connected objects at 20 billion by 2020. Meanwhile, analyst firm Ovum expects global M2M revenues, excluding the Internet of Things (IoT), to reach $44.8 billion by 2018, up $13.6 billion in 2013.

Telefonica’s M2M Global Partner Programme launched initially in the U.S. in June 2013. It was rolled out to Europe in February this year.

"We will now be working to extend the programme into new regions which will further accelerate membership and enhance the portfolio of M2M solutions we can sell to our customers, Garcia Meiro said.

"The continued success of the M2M Global Partner Programme proves that Telefonica remains a leader in the M2M market and is further evidence of our successful transformation into a digital telco," he added.
