Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2013 Q&A: How is the Digital World Impacting Security?
Source: Gartner Newsroom View: 278 Date: 2013-09-18

With Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2013 coming up, we asked Lawrence Pingree, research director at Gartner, to share his views on how the digital world is impacting the security market right now.

Q: The information security market is projected to reach $67 billion in 2013 and grow to $95 billion by 2017. How will the Nexus of Forces (mobile, cloud, information and social) transform the security market over the next few years?

A: In fact the nexus has already transformed the security market in many ways. For example, in the mobile space, security providers have introduced new features in many of their products to address the issues that are spawned when devices travel both outside and within the enterprise. Most customers are focused on mobile device management, but providers are increasingly taking an application data and isolation approach on mobile devices.

Cloud has emerged as another mechanism for information sharing as well as delivery options for market participants. The information aspect of the Nexus of Forces has largely focused on using greater amounts of data gathered across the infrastructure and the endpoint to enable enhanced security decisions by increasing the intelligence threats through the use of machine learning and big data frameworks.

On the social side, security-related compliance and brand monitoring solutions have emerged to ensure corporations can manage the risks that social media can represent within their employee base, as well as serve as an indication of potential malicious actors.

Q: Bring your own device (BYOD) is a megatrend that will have a far-reaching influence on the entire security industry. What are some of the challenges IT leaders are facing around BYOD?

A: BYOD continues to bring challenges for enterprises trying to protect their data and maintaining visibility into compliance mandates. Secondly, the issue of personal data ownership and protection come in to play where many organizations are asking, “how do we separate what is personal from what is company owned intellectual property?” The answer is not always clear and monitoring of these devices continues to be a challenge that is not easily solved.

Q: Demand for security products and services is expected to be driven, in large part, by the persistent threat landscape and influenced by increasingly targeted and evolving attack patterns. How can IT and security leaders address this growing threat?

A: IT and security leaders must first take a defense in-depth approach, as no one single solution will address all attack methods. However, advanced targeted attack solutions also known as advanced threat detection (ADT) products have emerged to identify targeted malware attacks (a common method used by advanced persistent threat actors), and these products should be considered to complement existing prevention technologies. Enhancing incident response processes and allocation of resources to “hunt” advanced attackers is an acceptable response to this new dynamic threat.
